Every memory I have at my grandma’s house includes the lamp – a hand painted ceramic mermaid sculpture with a lampshade adorned with seashells surrounded by hand painted fish. When I was really young I thought it was the coolest thing ever but as I got older I found it growing tackier and tackier to the point I was embarrassed by it when my friends came with me to visit my grandma. I never really understood it. My grandma always seemed to have great taste. The lamp didn’t fit. She would tell the story of how her father brought it home from the First World War and she ended up with it…
