23. Creature(s)
Double feature at the drive-in
Not my first choice in shows
But I give in to be with you
Waiting so long, heaven knows.
Snuggled up close all warm and cozy
We settle in for the all-night theater
Speaker at the window tuned just right
An arm, hot coffee, blanket our heater.
A frightening scene – I shift – surprised
A comforting hand upon my shoulder
Although it's now all calm and quiet
I think my date is getting bolder.
“No, not here – too much in open
My breasts are not the double feature
He sighs – we laugh – I realize
The movie star not the only creature.

Creature
-
Words you give me to speak,
Words fit-and-sized to a mouthpiece.
Say it right, you freak,
Let it roll off your tongue, and I might give you a new lease
To this life, the one you don’t deserve.
The one you tell me is yours, and yours alone,
As if your words were the better to learn
Than the person, the creature, that is my own.
Look me in these eyes dark and dismal,
Behind this face held in snarl-and-growl;
Do you see the thing that you have made, a mangy rascal
Of a dog fed up to howl.
To howl at the night, like those grey wolves of story,
But I can tell you, friend, that I…
Creatures
The house grows dark
No light
Not even a spark
I hate the night
Creepy noises begin
Tapping on the glass
Hope they do not come in
Wish I could sleep fast
Growling coming from the floor
Is it under my bed?
Was that scratching at my door?
Under covers I hide my head
How many creatures are there?
Do I look?
Do I dare?
Maybe I’ll be cooked
What the heck
I take a peek
Wouldn’t hurt to check
Hate feeling weak
Shadows on the wall
Looking scary
Must be ten feet tall
I feel wary
“Mommy!”
I scream
“Tommy!
It’s not what it seems”
She turned on the light
Nothing there; not a peep
Hated to admit…
