21. A Hop, Skip, and a Jump Away

One, two – the order of my day

A Hop, skip, and a jump away.

Three, four – don’t go out the door.

Five, six – so much from which to pick.

Seven, eight – I am no longer late.

Nine, ten – Do it all over again!

One, two – the end of my day,

Sleep a hop, skip, and a jump away.

A Hop, Skip, and a Jump Away

-

Didn’t the stories always say that the grass

Was greener on the other side, anyway?

Where the turf was soft, as if just awoken from that sleepy pass,

To the morning dew of a new, sunlit day.

It was always something just over the fence

Of that white picket farm house,

Beyond the mooing cows and cluck of hens;

Amidst the thrushes and undergrowth, the fantasy world of the mouse.

How to get there was the question of the day;

Past the wooded hollows and bogs gone sour,

Were we to envision such a foray

Into woods dark and dour?

You’ll find your way, they always say, past the dire

And paths…

A Hop, Skip, and a Jump Away

My days are numbered

My life in high school is coming to an end

No more will I be encumbered

By the rules and social hierarchy I had to fend

Commencement approaches

No more tests; no more laps

Goodbye to teachers; goodbye to coaches

Ready to don my gown and cap

I can see it now

Walking across the stage

Proud parents as I take my bow

Diploma given, too many emotions to gauge

Secured a date for dance

A beautiful girl, I never thought I would

Look forward to getting my chance

The evening should be good

The night draws near

Been waiting for this day

Everything I wished for all year
