Chasing Echoes

Like a dog chasing its tail

Or a cat, a beam of light

Like the grieving chasing ghosts

Or the vengeful seeing retribution

Like the lost chasing dreams

Or the tormented injecting escape

Like an echo, you cannot catch an idea

That moves in a future disguised as the past

Life moves in real time with you leading the way

Chasing Echoes

Silky smooth hair

Face of an angel

Freshman year I fell

Never told her, didn’t dare

She hung with the popular crowd

I couldn’t get near

Would look through me, I feared

Couldn’t say the words aloud

Loved her more than anyone

But, to her, I didn’t exist

Thought I might persist

Figured my life would be finished, done

She may as well be a pharaoh

Couldn’t get close enough to touch

The feeling is just too much

May as well be chasing echoes

Chasing Echoes

-

Remember the younger days of chase,

Those games of Grounders, Red Rover; games

That gave our young hearts a reason to race,

A reason to forget those school fames.

What happened to those games, where did

The fun go? And will there ever be a reason

To bring it back, to uncover what was hid?

Now, I sit and watch the season;

They go by, autumn-to-spring

And summer-fly-into-winter, how dull.

You could say I have lost my wing

If ever I did fly, this bull,

In a china shop we call life, you must think

I am some beast-of-burden, just by the way I sway, so-and-so.

I must tell you, whoever you are, fox or mink,

That…

19. Chasing Echoes

Elongated, dark

Shortened by light

Faded it goes

Chasing shadows

Elusive, fake

Long-lived, real

Always it seems

Chasing dreams

Everywhere, loud

Focused yet soft

Repeating it shows

Chasing echoes

Life carries on

Senses don’t stop

With it brings hope

Chasing shadows, chasing dreams, chasing echoes.
